Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater will start the New Year with three days of dance, by resetting her iconic "A Geography of Risk" from 2002 and by completing her world premiere of "Requiem for an Ocean." Both Isaacs' pieces embrace text, humor and passion. A third piece, created by Katie Stevenson-Nollet especially for pregnant company dancer Blythe Barton, will embrace memory and the wonder of new life.

In 2002, Jean and Company presented "A Geography of Risk" at Danspace in New York to great acclaim and according to Isaacs, "People have been asking for it ever since." The Village Voice called the piece, based on travel guidebooks, "a little masterpiece...dense with dramatic symbols, its headlong duets and clear massed dances snapped like rubber bands - fun, delicate, dangerous." Additional text by Garrison Keillor lends humor to his insights on the uncertainties of love affairs and helps Isaacs demonstrate that geographical territories and emotional states can be equally risky to explore.

The second half of the program will include a world premiere of the full length, "Requiem for an Ocean" features original music by San Diego Dance Theater composer Steve Baker, who is inspired by John Luther Adams' "Become Ocean" and Claude Debussy's "La Mer." The music is a truly immersive experience that is meant to be felt on an emotional level. The dance will feature original text by Meagan Marshall, a UCSD alumni, who currently teaches creative writing at both San Diego City College and SDSU.

As a visual component, Isaacs has collaborated with local sculptor Arline Fisch, whose "hanging jellies" will contribute to the underwater experience. A jewelry designer, sculptor, and crafts person Fisch is best known for her textile techniques in metal. A Professor (Emerita) of Art at San Diego State University, Fisch was named a "Living Treasure of California" for her work as an artist, educator, author and contributor to the field of American crafts. She recently received a Women Who Mean Business Lifetime Achievement Award from San Diego Business Journal.

Rounding out the program is an original work by Katie Stevinson-Nollet, a popular Trolley Dance choreographer. She will be in San Diego this holiday season to participate in a SDDT workshop and set a new work on Company dancer Blythe Barton in celebration of her first child. Stevinson-Nollet, a former dancer with San Diego Dance Theater, Isaacs McCaleb Dance and Patricia Sandback and Dancers, is currently the Artistic Director of Full Force Dance Theatre. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Hartford/Hartt School/Dance Division.

Dancers include: Angel Acuña, Blythe Barton, Brian Bose, Matt Carney, Desiree Cuizon-Fejeran, John Diaz, Cecily Holcombe, Trystan Loucado, Minaqua McPherson, Erica Ruse, and Jeremy Zapanta.
